I wish I’d known it before I paid the PayPal but it is what it is. At that point my alarm bells were going off and I realize I was getting scammed. I told this to the guy and he immediately gave me addresses on Zelle to pay the rest. I paid the first deposit of $580 via PayPal and then he said we need to pay the rest but I instantly got red flags and notices on PayPal saying I could no longer pay that person anymore as an alert. Both of those were red flags but I assumed the check had cleared so I was OK. I also noticed that his phone number had changed from the day before. He gave me a PayPal address that was some random person. He then indicated we need to make a deposit for the movers to keep the spot and since you’ve already paid me I need to pay them. So the next day rolls around and the funds have already cleared and he told me the movers can’t make it that day but they will be coming two days later. I did deposit it and the funds did clear. He cut me the check and sent it to me digitally and told me to deposit it and the funds would clear my bank by the next day. Nonetheless he told me he was going to need me to pay the movers because I was the last pick up but I could pay them while they were there in front of me. That was a red flag but I googled the company him and everything I could think of and I couldn’t find any triggers that it was a scam. So he told me he was going to cut me a check for $1,350. So we came to a total of $185 for the merchandise and he told me his company was going to pay for it and the only way they could pay by check but he would let it clear before we did anything. Once we did he agreed to meet me for the pick up but said that he was going to send his movers because he’s still out of town. He asked to purchase multiple items and was really pushing me to confirm that they were in good condition. He indicated he was moving to the area with his company and needed some furniture and was willing to pay me the day before he picked it up so that I would know he was legit. I’m selling some furniture through OfferUp and somebody contacted me with general interest. I’m usually pretty good at catching things but this one got past me. TL/DR - Don’t accept any checks for OfferUp merchandise.
